Every person in the room sat completely still, waiting for Louis’ response. He only stared. He inspected the way her nervous smile curved, the way she shook ever so slightly; examined her bright eyes for a trace of… something. But what? She pulled her hands down from her face and clasped them tightly behind her back, shifting her weight onto her left foot.

“Mine?” Louis’ soft whisper broke the silence. He let his eyes fall from her face to the diamond ring he was still holding. She looked down to it, too, and then to the floor and nodded. To everyone’s surprise, Louis smiled. A great bright smile that lit up the room. He stood from the couch and took Eleanor in his arms and held her like she could’ve been taken away any minute. He took  a deep breath and murmered, “I love you.”

Harry had been wondering what was taking Eleanor so long and got up and walked in, shocked by the scene he stood before. “W-what’s going on?” He stammered.

Louis stepped back slightly and turned to Harry. “Elly is pregnant,” he beamed.

Harry’s eyes widened. “Oh…” his eyes turned to the floor. “Oh!” he looked up and looked to Eleanor’s horror stricken face.

“What, harry?” She spoke through a nervous smile. “What’s the matter?”

Harry thought for a moment and relaxed. “Oh, nothing. Congrats… I-I guess” he smiled and hugged her awkwardly. She put one arm around him and stepped away.

Louis twirled the ring in his hand and looked at Eleanor, expectantly.

“Of course!” She pulled him into her arms and kissed him. He pulled away to slikp the ring onto her finger, and wiped away a tear from her face.

    Harry froze, realizing. “I-I’d better go… I-I have a… uh… a thing… to get to,”

Louis and Eleanor were trapped, staring into each other’s eyes. Niall waved goodbye as Harry walked away. Liam grimaced.

Suddenly, Louis’ phone buzzed in his pockte. He pulled it out and read the text from Harry that said, “Im out. Tell the boys Im out. Im done.” He shut his phone and looked up to the boys, who were still sitting on the couch.

“He’s… quitting,” Louis whispered. “Harry is quitting,”

Eleanor looked down to the glittering diamond that crowned her finger and bit her lip.

“He’s what?” Niall cocked his head to the side. “Harry is quitting?”

    Louis nodded, solemnly.

“Oh no,” Eleanor murmered. Her hands dropped to her stomach and her eyes widened. “Oh no,” she said a little bit louder.

Louis wrapped his arms around her; he looked worried. “What is it, sweetheart?” He questioned.

Eleanor swallowed hard and said shook her head. “N-nothing,” she forced a smile. “Everything’s wonderful,” she pressed her lips to his and her hand to his cheek. Louis wrapped himself around her and felt the firey tingle of his lips on hers. Everything dissappeared.

    Liam coughed.

“Oh,” Louis laughed awkwardly and stepped away from the girl and ruffled his hair. Eleanor blushed and looked down.

After a few moments of silence, Zayn was the first to speak up. “So what’s Harry’s problem?”

Louis shrugged. Eleanor bit her lip and said nothing. Murmurs of “I dont know” and “Yeah whats gotten into him lately?” came from Niall and Liam.

Eleanor rocked uncomfortably on her heels as the boys casually conversed for a few minutes. Suddenly, she blurted out, “Louis it might not be your baby!” as quickly as she’d spoken, she shut her eyes tight and covered her face, crying uncontrollably. Gasps were heard from Liam, Niall and Zayn and Louis shot them angry looks. He took Eleanor into his arms and tried to calm her down.

“Shh, Shh,” he cooed. “Everything’s alright.”

“No! No! No!” she said between sobs.

Louis stroked her hair. “Elly, darling,” He turned her by her shoulders and turned her to look into her eyes. “I love you,” she smiled weakly and Louis turned to face the rest of the boys. “Its been a hell of a day. I think we oughtta turn in,” he guided the sobbing girl to the door and waved again before getting in the car and driving off.

Midway through the drive, the crying had stopped. She simply sat silently, staring out the window. Without looking away from the road, Louis spoke. “Who’s baby could it be?” He bit his lip.

She looked at him and then looked down to her lap. “Harry’s,” she whispered quietly.

He swallowed hard. “Y-you and Harry actually…” he trailed off, not wanting to complete the thought. She nodded solemnly. “Unbelievable,” he murmured.

She wiped a tear and looked out the window. “You dont know how sorry I am,” she whispered, beginning to cry again. “I love you. I dont love him. I never loved him.”

“You must not love me that much,” he spoke again, louder this time. The words hit Eleanor like whips and stung at her heart. “If you would cheat on me.”

` “I do,” she whispered. When she tried to speak again, the only sounds she could make were sobs. She gave up and curled up, away from Louis, looking out the window, to the horizon, where the sun was setting and rain clouds were threatening.

The remainder of the drive continued in silence. When they pulled into the driveway, Louis got out of the car and walked inside, not bothering to open Eleanor’s door. Eleanor drew a deep breath and stumbled into the house and sat on their bed. Louis walked in with a duffle bag and began to pile clothes into it. She looked at him, half scared, half curious.

“Im staying with Zayn for a while. Until you can figure out who you really want to be with,” he spat at her, zipping up the bag.

“I want you!” She shouted, tear tracks streaked down her face.

He shook his head. “Not enough,” he picked up the bag and left her alone, sitting on the bed. She lay back and turned the telly on. She lay there for hours, unable to move or sleep or even cry. All she could do was remember. She remembered the day she met Louis. She remembered the day he’d decided to make her his. She remembered how happy they used to be. She remembered the sleepless nights they would spend, building forts out of chairs and sheets and messing around like little kids. And then she thought of Harry. She thought of the charming way he spoke to her. She thought of the obvious flirting she used to ignore. Then she thought of the way she stopped ignoring his advances. And she thought of the way she’d betrayed Louis, and the way she’d betrayed her heart. And then she thought of the baby growing inside her. This baby would need a father. This baby would need a pleasent home. This baby would need love and shelter. This baby would need things she, alone, could not provide. She thought of only one man who could provide these things. Then she picked up her phone and dialed his phone number.

Several nervewracking moments passed before Louis picked up the other end. “Hello?” he sounded half awake.

“Did I wake you?” She worried, remembering how late it was.

“Yeah…” he groaned. “What do you want?”

` She told him everything, from the memories she played over in her head, to the projected things she saw in the future. She told him that she didnt care if the baby carried Harry’s DNA. She didnt care about Harry at all. She cared about the baby, and about Louis. She cared about her future. She cared about what happened to Louis. After several minutes of Eleanor pouring her heart out to Louis, there was silence. A silence that was probably only a few seconds but seemed like a lifetime to both parties. Louis didn’t know what to say.

“I-I…” he began, “Eleanor. You broke my heart. You cheated on me with my best friend. You may be pregnant with his baby. How am I supposed to forgive you so easily?” he hung up and left Eleanor with only the sound of the cat at the foot of the bed, purring. She fell back onto the cold, empty bed and slept.

She slept and slept and slept. In that sleep, she dreamed. She dreamed of Louis and she dreamed of her perfect, healthy child. The child looked just like Louis but a little girl with bouncing curls pulled into pigtails that were tied with lime green ribbons. Her rosy cheeks were pulled into a bright smile. She sat in Louis’ arms and grinned. Then a girl walked over and placed her hand on Louis’ shoulder. She smiled and for a moment, it looked as if it were a family photo. Except there was one problem… the girl wasn’t Eleanor. She had straight blonde hair that reached her shoulders and she wore a preppy green house-wife looking blouse and skirt. Her eyes were crystal blue. And she wore a ring on her hand. A glittering diamond ring.

Eleanor sat up, breathing hard and held up her hand in front of her face. The sparkling token Louis had placed on her finger earlier that day glowed in the moonlight that broke through the window. She yanked the ring from her finger and tossed it onto the carpet in the corner of the room. She lay, sleepless for several more hours and waited for the sun to rise.

While Eleanor sat in total stillborn agony, Louis did not. He was stretched out of Zayn’s couch, wrapped in a red and blue striped blanket, tossing in his nightmares for hours at a time. For the brief moments he was able to escape sleep, he sat and sobbed silently. The way he missed Eleanor was more than he’d ever felt before. And more than that, he longed for the child he knew was inside her. He longed for the family he’d once hoped they’d one day have. But now, he knew she was gone. There was no turning back. He’d loved her. And he’d lost her. And now all he could do was live with himself.

    -To be continued… again-
